I found this article, and it caught my interest about how a certain moth sucks a human blood..

A previously unknown population of vampire moths has been found in Siberia. And in a twist worthy of a Halloween horror movie, entomologists say the bloodsuckers may have evolved from a purely fruit-eating species.

Only slight variations in wing patterns distinguish the Russian population from a widely distributed moth species, Calyptra thalictri, in central and southern Europe known to feed only on fruit.

When the Russian moths were experimentally offered human hands this summer, the insects drilled their hook-and-barb-lined tongues under the skin and sucked blood.

Entomologist Jennifer Zaspel at the University of Florida in Gainesville said the discovery suggests the moth population could be on an "evolutionary trajectory" away from other C. thalictri populations. This is the second population of vampire moths Zaspel and her team have found. They discovered the first in Russia in 2006.

Next January, she will compare the Russian population’s DNA to that of other populations and other species to confirm her suspicions.

"Based on geography, based on behavior, and based on a phenotypic variation we saw in the wing pattern, we can speculate that this represents something different, something new," Zaspel said.

"But it is really difficult to say without knowing genetic differences between individuals in that population, and among individuals from other populations, how different this group is going to be."

(Zaspel’s research is funded in part by a grant from the National Geographic Society’s Committee for Research and Exploration. National Geographic owns National Geographic News.)

Blood Feeding

If it turns out that Zaspel has indeed caught a fruit-eating moth evolving blood-feeding behavior, it could provide clues as to how some moths develop a taste for blood.

entertainmenT buzz, you should know this 4:04 am
It has been widely spread in some of the online entertainment sites like justjared and eonline about what happened to Chad Micheal Murray’s interview wherein he kinda spill the beans when he was asked by a news anchor about his relationship and failed marriage to Sophia and he responded: “It’s one of those things where you grow up a lot faster. You’re put in a situation where you’re gonna deal with things right in your face. But I think [Sophia and I] are both professional and mature enough to get through it. And now it’s just easy. We’re just friends. And she’s got James, and James and I are friends. It’s just a little tight group in Wilmington.”

I’m a huge one tree hill fan, and nathan (James Lafferty), brooke (Sophia Bush) are one of my favorite actors in the show, happy for them, i hope we’ll hear it directly from them in the coming days. keep posted.

Here is a picture of them together at the LAX airport, Sophia was under James (with a white cap) right shoulder.

Apple said Friday it will replace power adapters sold with its popular iPhone 3G mobile telephones because of a risk prongs will snap and cause people to be jolted by electricity.

"We have received reports of detached blades involving a very small percentage of the adapters sold, but no injuries have been reported," the California company said on a Web page providing adapter exchange details.

The part Apple is offering to replace is an "Ultracompact USB power adapter" reportedly included with iPhone 3G models sold in Japan, Canada, Mexico, the United States and a half dozen South American countries.

"Customer safety is always Apple’s top priority, and therefore we have voluntarily decided to exchange every Ultracompact power adapter for a new, redesigned adapter, free of charge," Apple said.

Apple advises iPhone 3G owners to charge their handsets by plugging them into computers or with a standard-sized Apple power adapter until the potentially problematic part is replaced.

Instructions for getting Apple adapters replaced were posted online at www.apple.com/support/usbadapter/exchangeprogram/.

The Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE) on Friday said that new job opportunities are opening up for Filipino workers in six countries with a high demand for workers. Labor Department Secretary Marianito Roque told members of the Committee on Appropriations that the government is discussing with a number of countries for the entry of Filipino workers in France, Norway, Finland, Canada, Australia and Saudi Arabia.

France needs nurses, information technology professionals and engineers while Norway and Finland need more health workers.

The DOLE secretary meanwhile, said that the Philippines will increase its deployment of Filipino workers to Canada, later on in Alberta which is an oil-rich province, that can generate 40,000 jobs a year for highly-skilled workers. He said the government is also having discussions with the Australian Deputy Prime Minister for the entry of 30,000 professionals over the next 10 years especially in the southern part of Australia, in Adelaide.

Roque said engineers and IT professionals are in demand. He told representatives that Saudi Arabia continues to increase its demand for Filipino workers because of the rise of megacities in the country. Roque said Filipino workers continue to attract overseas foreign employers because of their technical and language ability.

About 200,000 new jobs overseas are expected to be created, an increase of 20% to the current number of more than a million overseas Filipino workers who send in $1.4-B in remittances.

news alert, you should know thisSeptember 6, 2008 12:57 am

An unexpectedly steep 84,000 US jobs were lost in August and the national unemployment rate hit a five-year high of 6.1 percent, fanning worry ahead of November’s presidential vote about rising recession risks.

The eighth straight month of job cuts underlined the weakening state of labor markets and prompted back-and-forth jibes by Democratic presidential contender Sen. Barack Obama and Republican nominee Sen. John McCain about how to help.

McCain called for more job training while Obama said tax cuts for working families and aid for states was needed. The Bush administration insisted the economy was "fundamentally sound" and that an additional stimulus program was not needed.

A total 605,000 employees have been slashed from payrolls so far this year — nearly a quarter million in the last three months alone — which private-sector analysts said clearly implies a heightened risk of an economic contraction.

"According to our estimates, the sharp rise in the unemployment rate over the past six months translates into a recession probability of 70 percent, which is higher than in 1990-91 and 2001," said Harm Bandholz of UniCredit Markets in New York, referring to the two most recent recessions.

The speaker of the US House of Representatives, California Democrat Nancy Pelosi, renewed a pledge to seek a second economic stimulus program to pick up from one earlier in the year that has now largely been paid out to consumers.

The intently watched Labor Department jobs report caught financial markets by surprise because the losses were above expectations and June and July cuts each were revised up. The department said a total 58,000 more jobs were lost in June and July than it had previously thought.

Stock prices initially fell but largely recovered by the close of trading because of bargain-hunting for beaten-down shares of financial companies. The Dow Jones industrial average .DJI ended up 32.73 points at 11,220.96 while the high tech-laden Nasdaq Composite Index .IXIC was off 3.16 points, at 2,255.88.

The dollar similarly fell in early trading but edged higher against the euro later in the day. Short-term interest rate futures, which little more than a month ago signaled a Fed rate hike was likely by year-end, shifted to suggest a small chance the central bank could lower borrowing costs this year.

Analysts said the bleak hiring data likely means that Federal Reserve policy-makers will feel obliged to keep interest rates low for an extended period.

"The economy is clearly deteriorating," said Gary Thayer, senior economist for Wachovia Securities in St. Louis. "We’re also seeing weakness around the globe so there’s less reason for the Fed to focus on inflation and more reason to focus on getting the economy back on its feet."
